A morning on the water turned into a lesson in Maine’s future workforce as 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵstudents harvested nearly 1,000 pounds of kelp from the University's sea farm this spring. From harvesting a new kelp variety to supplying a student-run enterprise, the annual tradition offered a hands-on look at Maine’s evolving working waterfront while providing valuable lessons in aquaculture, entrepreneurship, and the state's changing coastal economy.

Michelle Caputo, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵ School of Marine and Environmental Programs and a conservation biologist, has launched a systematic effort to track harbor porpoises along the Maine coast, the first such research in at least 10 years.
