Portsmouth Herald cites research by Tom Chalmers McLaughlin on state budget cuts

Research by Thomas Chalmers McLaughlin, Ph.D., associate professor of social work, on the economic and social costs of cuts in the state mental health budget, were cited in Legislative discussions and in the on Feb. 21, 2010. The Portsmouth Herald quoted McLaughlin's recent study that indicates that since 2008, the beginning of the state's budget crisis, there has been a 26 percent increase in mental health calls to law enforcement. "The connection between these calls for service and state funding cuts seems clear ... The only relevant change in the system has been the funding cuts that affect how these services are provided."
