Eva Rose Balog, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, recently published an article in ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

The article, titled "Stimuli-Responsive Genetically Engineered Polymer Hydrogel Demonstrates Emergent Optical Responses," describes the synthesis and characterization of a hydrogel made by combining stimuli-responsive, stretchy protein polymers with environmentally-sensitive fluorescent organic molecules, creating elastic hydrogels with tunable optical properties.

According to the article, such 鈥渋ntelligent鈥 functional materials may have applications in tissue engineering scaffolds, artificial skins or soft biocompatible displays and sensors.
