UNE’s Nang Tin Maung publishes article on seasonal allergies in ‘Journal Tribune’
The July 2 issue of the Journal Tribune featured a column by Nang H. Tin Maung, Ph.D., M.P.H., program manager of the 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵ’s Graduate Programs in Public Health, as part of the newspaper’s Health & Wellness series.
Her column addressed how best to manage seasonal allergies – a condition, according to Maung, that plagues 40 to 60 million Americans.
Maung explained that the immune systems of seasonal allergy sufferers recognize pollens as foreign particles and respond by producing antibodies and chemicals that result in allergy symptoms. She recommends that those who are allergic keep an allergy diary in order to pinpoint the specific pollen types to which they are sensitive. She also suggests staying indoors as much as possible, wearing masks and/or sunglasses to reduce exposure to allergens, and properly maintaining air conditioner filters.
