Dental Hygiene (4-Year B.S.)

Why UNE

Since my first year at UNE, I’ve participated in clubs and activities on campus. 91Ö±²¥ÊÓÆµhas so much to offer for students — I was always able to find new events. I tried ice climbing and whitewater rafting for the first time. I got to raft the Kennebec, the Dead, and the Penobscot rivers in Maine all because of UNE! I never got homesick because I was constantly surrounded by fun and interactive community members.

Service Learning in Action

Service, to me, is more than a word; it represents a collection of actions that shape one’s character. Over the past four years at UNE, I have been fortunate to experience countless opportunities that have enriched both my education and personal growth. I am truly grateful for the doors this institution has opened. 

Through my involvement in various service learning experiences, I have contributed to communities and causes I never imagined I would have the chance to impact. These experiences have broadened my perspective, strengthened my sense of purpose, and encouraged me to view the world through a more open and empathetic lens. I look forward to continuing this commitment to service and making meaningful contributions to the community in the years ahead.

Exceptional Teaching and Learning

91Ö±²¥ÊÓÆµhas an excellent Dental Hygiene program — from the incredible faculty and staff to the education provided. The faculty are so hands-on and willing to help with anything you need during your time in the program. The program director is also very knowledgeable and active in the program, which I saw as a huge draw. 

One thing I really enjoyed about the Dental Hygiene program is how close and connected my cohort was. There were about 45 of us, and we all knew each other, which made each memory and moment more special as time went on. 91Ö±²¥ÊÓÆµprovided such a welcoming and supportive community.

I also loved that I got to experience both [campuses]. The Biddeford Campus gave the more traditional college campus feel, while the Portland Campus gave more professional vibes. The transition between the two campuses from sophomore to junior year was very smooth, and the faculty were always there to support the change. 

Hands-On Learning

The clinical side of the Dental Hygiene program is incredible. Having the program source patients throughout the two years on the Portland Campus was amazing. Not all dental hygiene programs provide this, so it made such a difference in skill level. I loved having patients come back and request me as their clinician. I was able to bond with my patients — they were all so patient and kind. 

The program also does an excellent job in preparing students for the real world with clinical rotations all over Maine. We were able to go to nursing homes, schools, and public health clinics — all were so eye opening and very rewarding. I am now seeking a dental hygienist career in public health. I didn’t know going into the program that public health was an option, and I am forever grateful for the experiences that led me to this decision.
